Foam recycling at the end of a landing area
Thanks to CO2-neutral foam recycling, the foam blocks of pole vault and high jump landing areas do not have to go to waste at the end of their life cycle. Together with our supplier, we are committed to ensuring that aging mats are disposed of properly so that the foam can be recycled. Even if new blocks for pole vault and high jump landing areas cannot be produced from it due to the high quality requirements for mat foams, we save resources and protect the environment.
Foam – the inner workings of a high jump landing area
High quality high jump landing areas and pole vault landing areas are crucial for the safety of the athletes. Depending on the jump height, the requirements for the damping properties of the mat vary. Different foam core systems allow a soft landing in all cases. That is, the landing areas for high jump and pole vault are mainly made of foam. We have already presented the detailed structure of the mats in an earlier article.
The picture shows the inside of a foldable high jump landing area for training or school sports. This consists of foam blocks with rather hard landing properties. The black wear mat rests on the foam blocks and is also made of foam.
The high proportion of foam in high jump landing areas and pole vault landing areas shows how important foam recycling is. With this alone, a large part of old mats can be reused.
Foam recycling begins with proper disposal. Together with our foam supplier, we ensure that the foams find their way to the recycling plants. In several plants in Germany, the discarded foams are first flocculated or shredded. Using a water-based adhesive, the flakes of different foam waste are chemically bonded to form what is known as composite foam. This foam has a higher strength due to production, which makes it impossible to reuse in high jump landing areas. However, there are a number of other applications – even in the sports sector.
Large landing areas become small mats
Composite foams pressed from old high jump landing areas and other foams are used mainly as insulation material. The properties of the newly formed raw material are ideal for sound insulation of, for example, noisy machinery. Composite seat cushions are also very popular due to their higher stability.
In addition, the recycled mat foam is used to make new mats for sports activities. Floor gymnastics mats are much stronger than high jump landing areas, making them ideal for use with the recycled composite foams.
Sustainability in sports equipment manufacturing
We are all responsible for the current state of our earth – therefore we are all responsible for the preservation of our earth.
